Volunteering with New Lake Peer Support Inc. can be a really rewarding way to spend your spare time, and there are plenty of different and flexible ways to get involved.

Our volunteers give their time, energy and skills to help us raise money, deliver our services and provide administrative and events support. A little of your time can make a big difference.

Volunteering gives you great opportunities to meet new people, participate in your local community and learn new skills. It could even help you to find paid employment.

Volunteering with New Lake Peer Support Ltd. can be a really rewarding way to spend your spare time, and there are plenty of different and flexible ways to get involved and these include:

Supporting people with disability

You could assist a person with disability for a couple of hours each week or once a fortnight to enjoy a variety of activities such as going for a walk; enjoying a coffee and a chat; bowling; attending a community event or movie. Contact us or email today to find out more about volunteering.

Fundraising

We run all kinds of events to raise money for New Lake Peer Support Ltd. from raffles to variety concerts (Encore on Stage), and volunteers play an important role in running these events.

Community Fundraising

Why not host a trivia night, hold a fashion parade, host a coffee morning or book club or hold a charity golf tournament? Or maybe you’d prefer to do a sponsored walk-a-thon or nominate New Lake Peer Support Ltd. as your chosen charity at your annual event? There are many different activities or events to choose from. Corporate volunteering

Get your company involved and join our Corporate Volunteer program. Staff volunteering is a great way for your staff to build skills and develop networks, while helping us with much needed assistance to enrich the lives of the people we support. There is a range of opportunities available for your staff to contribute their time in a purposeful and rewarding way. Donate your skills/services

We are always in need of people with skills like office administration and other professional service such as pro bono work (IT, law, accounting, finance, marketing and event management). Contact us or email today to find out more about volunteering opportunities.

Community Garden

Student Placements

We can provide opportunities for students to gain knowledge, skills and experience through our student placement program. It is a great opportunity to put the learnt theory into practice. Placements are available in the fields of disability support, welfare work and community development. Contact us or email if you are interested in a student placement with us.

We support our volunteers to do the best they can, whether that’s through on-the-job training, providing information packs, covering travel expenses where appropriate or giving you other specific support needed for your volunteering role.

Rosie’s Story

For Rosie supporting people with disability hits extremely close to home.

In 2006, her daughter passed away from a brain tumour, which was diagnosed when she was 3.

Rosie’s daughter had received support from New Lake Peer Support Ltd., in Merewether, when she was 18 to gain support to perform daily activities.

When her daughter died Rosie was lost. “I was at a loose end, I didn’t know what to do,” she said.

“I knew I wanted to do something to help people like my daughter and my husband pushed me, suggesting I go and do some volunteering”.

“I rang to ask if there was any volunteering work going and she said yes”.

Rosie has volunteered with New Lake for 9 years and she will never look back.

“Having a daughter like my daughter has made it so rewarding for me to do what I do, and a lot of people just like to know there is a person there” she said.

Volunteering can sometimes prove difficult but she never feels pushed to offer her support.

“I don’t feel like I am pressured to come and volunteer if I don’t want to” she said.

“It is just something I love doing. New Lake is very accommodating, and if I need time off they say go for it”.

“Even when you come as a volunteer you still have to do your fair share of work because if you don’t, it’s not easy on other people” she said.

“You have to pull your weight as well”.

“I take this as a responsibility – I don’t say I’m not going to come in today because I am sick or can’t be bothered”.

“I have a roster. I am one of the team and I do what I have to do.”

Luckily, New Lake has a “phenomenal work environment”. I work with three lovely Activity Officers on three separate days and I get along with everyone. New Lake are a lovely organisation and I love the people here.

She looks forward to volunteering at New Lake and says she can’t imagine not working here.
